Privacy Policy

Who we are

We are Luke Smith and Nell Sleet, owners and contributors to the slow travel blog “What if we walked?” found at https://whatifwewalked.com (“Website”). This website is governed by the following privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”).

We, Luke and Nell, respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it. The purpose of this Privacy Policy is to inform you what personal information we may collect and how we may use it. We are doing everything we can to ensure our Website is compliant with new General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) 2016/679. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us. Please know that the data we collect from you is secure, and if there is a data breach, you, the reader will know within 72 hours of breach.

This statement only applies to this Website.

What personal information do we collect?

Voluntarily collected information

We may collect personal information from you such as your name and email address when you voluntarily submit information to our Website by leaving a comment, subscribing to our newsletter, or messaging us via the contact form.

Automatically-collected information

We may also automatically collect certain information about you and the device with which you access our Website. We use third-parties such as Google Analytics which automatically collects information such as your IP address, the pages you viewed and other actions you take when using our Website, as well as the dates/times when you accessed our Website. This purely helps us analyse content performance.

Cookies

We may log information using cookies, which are small data files stored on your browser by our Website. You can turn off the use of cookies at anytime by modifying your Internet browser’s settings.

How do we use the information we collect?

We will most commonly use the information collected to:

  • Operate and maintain the website;
  • Send you newsletters. There will always be an opt-out button at the bottom of the e-mail;
  • Send you the odd technical or administrative update (this would be very rare!);
  • Respond to your comments;
  • Track and measure statistics on the Website;
  • Protect, investigate and deter against unauthorised or illegal activity.

Third-Party Use of Information

We use third-party service providers on our Website. Each third-party service provider’s use of your personal information is dictated by their respective privacy policies.

We currently use the following third-party service providers:

  • Google Analytics by Monster Insights – this helps us track our Website’s usage and provides us with information on user actions. Google Analytics may capture your IP address, but no other information is captured or stored;
  • Mail Chimp – this delivers e-mail updates and newsletters to subscribers. We store subscribers name and e-mail on a Mail Chimp list for purposes of delivering these messages. You can refer to Mail Chimp’s privacy policy for further information. At the bottom of every message we send to you there is always an unsubscribe button;
  • Flamingo – this stores submitted messages on the Website via our contact form and comments in the website database. This eliminates the chance of missing your messages if for example our e-mail address provider failed.

Retaining your personal information

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on this Website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your personal information

If you have an account on this Website, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal information we hold about you, including any information you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal information we hold about you. This does not include any information we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Information regarding minors

This Website doesn’t knowingly collect any personally identifiable information from minors under 16 years of age. If a parent or guardian believes this Website has personal information of a minor under age 16, please make contact in order to remove this information.

Please note that the above Privacy Policy is subject to change at any time and without notice at our discretion or due to legal changes. We will strive to e-mail you regarding these changes.
