We are Luke and Nell, a British travel couple in our late twenties. Together we’ve set out to travel the world the slow way, exploring the world on foot.
In life so far we have been on a few paths. After university, we made the usual migration to the city and a tiny flat (above a Sports Direct and with a very persistent little family of mice as housemates). We got jobs and all the travel we ever did was taking the commuter train, bus, and bike (slow travel, different reasons).
Then, needing a change, we travelled and worked abroad, roaming all over the world, from New Zealand to Italy. We were amazed by all that we experienced, and were sure we wanted to see more.
So with motivations that were still a bit mysterious even to us we thought: well, what if we walked?
And that’s what we did. We started our blog What if we walked? in 2017 by walking the Via Francigena path from Canterbury to Rome, a 2,000km pilgrim trail that took us four months. If you’re new, you can follow that whole journey here. For us, it was life-changing.
Our type of walking is not an endurance hike or a race. It’s just walking at a simple, everyday human speed. Travelling to experience and absorb as much of what we pass through as possible: the cultures, the details – big and little. Slow, simple, seasonal, personal.
We are passionate about walking as a form of travel, and as a lifestyle. You can probably tell this from our seven reasons why we walk here.
So come with us as we explore places you may or may not know, taking the slow route and stopping to breathe it all in.
Thanks for stopping by,
Luke and Nell
